Gardasil is a licensed vaccine available in the UK. It helps prevent some
types of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.
Gardasil is licensed in the UK for girls and women aged 9 to 26.
It is given as 3 injections over 6 months.
Gardasil helps prevent against diseases that are caused by HPV types 6,
11, 16, and 18.
These include:
Cervical cancer
Cervical abnormalities that can sometimes lead to cervical cancer
Genital warts
HPV Types 16 and 18 cause 70% of cervical cancer cases, and HPV Types
6 and 11 cause 90% of genital warts cases.
Gardasil works when given before you have any contact with HPV Types 6,
11, 16, and 18. It does not prevent other strains of HPV infection.
If you've already been infected with HPV, you may still benefit from Gardasil
because it is unlikely that you have been infected with all 4 types of the virus
covered by the vaccine
The length of vaccine protection is not known yet. To date, research shows
that it protects for at least 5 years. It is possible that a booster may be
needed at some point in the future, to maintain protection.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT GARDASIL
Gardsail may not fully protect everyone and does not prevent all types of
cervical cancer, so it is important to continue regular cervical cancer
screening.
Gardasil is not recommended for women who are pregnant.
Gardasil will not treat these diseases and will not protect against diseases
caused by other types of HPV.
Gardasil can sometimes cause pain, swelling, itching, and redness at the
injection site, fever, nausea, and dizziness.
